Light of the World

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

A few years ago when Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island, it was a difficult time for us all. So many people were affected by this tragedy. I can honestly say that my family was blessed in the fact that we only lost our electricity. I remember sitting around our dining room table with flashlights and candles lit. It’s remarkable that such little light can brighten up a whole room filled with darkness.

Jesus declares to us that He is the light of the world. He shines so brightly that it overcomes the darkness that surrounds us in this universe. People’s hearts have darkened with hatred towards their fellow man, violence has run rampant through our streets, and the political world has brought fear and anxiety to many. Yet through all of it, God is still in control. His light will bring life to everyone that believes in Him.

John 1:4- In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

I remember once waking up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water. I had to walk across the whole room just to put the light on; however, in my attempt to do so, I stubbed my big toe. Darkness will make you stumble, but the light will open your eyes so that you can see where you are going. Jesus tells us that when we follow Him we won’t walk in darkness, but we’ll have the light of life. He desires to open our eyes to the truth so that we can walk in the path that He has created for us. It’s important to know that we are children of the light, not of darkness.

1 Thessalonians 5:5- You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.

We were children of darkness before we knew Christ. However, since we’ve made Jesus the Lord of our lives, we are now children of the light. What does this mean? It means that we follow the teachings of Christ, we stand for righteousness, we live for God and we glorify the Lord in everything that we do. The reason we do all these things is because Jesus is the light of the world.
