The Greatest Gift

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

What’s the BEST Christmas gift that you’ve ever gotten? I’ll never forget mine. The year was 1996 and I received tickets to a Knicks vs Bulls game. It was a big deal because Michael Jordan was making his first appearance back to New York since he came out of retirement. What a night! The atmosphere was electric as Madison Square Garden was sold out to see their beloved Knicks play the Chicago Bulls. My gift became even more special when the Knicks destroyed the Bulls by 32 points. Jordan was completely off his game…. It was great!

However, even though the game was awesome, there was one flaw about the gift. It only lasted one night. I might have the memories of that particular time in my life, but the gift itself is gone. Many times in our lives we may receive amazing gifts, but as time goes on those presents fade away. There is one gift that we can hold onto for eternity and His name is JESUS!

In the opening Scripture we find that God GAVE US His Son. Jesus is our gift. Why did God give us Jesus? The first reason is so that we could be forgiven of our sins.

Matthew 1:21- And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

Jesus is our Savior. He died on a cross to save us from our sins. Why? He rescued us from eternal damnation because of His love for us. His desire for us is to be with Him forever in heaven. His love for us is unconditional and His mercy and grace is immeasurable.

The second reason God gave us His Son is so that we could have an abundant life.

John 10:10- The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Life is more enjoyable when Jesus is on your side. Today, as we celebrate Christmas, let us never forget that Jesus is the greatest gift.
