Walk on Water, into 2017
Pastor Sharon Hurkens
“Yes, come.” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matthew 14:29-31
Peter was the only person in the boat who reacted to Jesus in faith. Because he got out of the boat and trusted Jesus he experienced a very unusual demonstration of God’s power. Jesus’ presence in the storm caused Peter to exercise a fearless faith. He attempted the impossible. It’s at this point however, that he looked at his circumstances, his surroundings and realized the high waves around him. Even though his faith was strong enough to trust the words of his Savior, he wavered and he took his eyes off of Christ.
We all do this, we start out strong with good intentions; sometimes our faith is big enough for us to attempt the impossible. It’s at this time where we are either listening to that inner voice of doubt and we surrender to it and rather believe that the storm or circumstance we are in is bigger than our God.
God is the only One big enough to take us by the hand and lead us through the most difficult times or circumstances. Peter cries out to Jesus to help him. What does Jesus do? Does He turn away and let Peter drown? No, He reaches for Peter and grabs him. But He does let Peter know that he has little faith and asks Peter “Why did you doubt me?”
We have much to learn about who Jesus was and is. We need to walk into 2017 with the utmost confidence in God. He is calling us to great things this year. Keep your eyes on Him, despite the circumstances around us. We will then experience the impossible, all because He calls us to walk on water.
For I am the Lord your God, who stirs up the sea, causing its waves to roar. My name is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. And I have put my words in your mouth and hidden you safely in my hand. I stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundations of the earth. Isa 51:15-16.
