Please God Not Men

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. Colossians 3:23

I once worked with a pastor that told me, before she got into the ministry, she cleaned the bathrooms at the church she was attending at the time. She explained that it wasn’t the most rewarding job, but her goal was to make it as clean as possible because God’s house deserved the best. She did it with all of her heart due to her love for the Lord. Many times we’ll do a job so we can satisfy the status quota for man, but we should be doing our jobs so we can bring glory to God.

As humans, we have this innate desire to please our bosses. We want them to see our hard work so that we can climb up the ladder of success. Please don’t get me wrong, getting a promotion is a wonderful thing. However, the motivation behind our hard work should not be based off of pleasing people. We should strive to do our very best so that we can please the Lord.

Ephesians 6:5-7- Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; 6 not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.

Another way we try to please people is by doing good deeds. Sometimes we do things for people just to receive their gratitude or to be accepted by them. Whatever the reason is, we shouldn’t try to show off. This attitude will produce pride in our hearts and will eventually make us fall in the end. The Lord sees everything that we do and He won’t bless us if we’re trying to please people.

Matthew 6:1- “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

Every day is a journey living for the Lord, so let’s strive to do our best to follow Him. We’re here on this earth to please God not men.
