Abiding in Him
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. John 15:4
Years ago I was speaking to a lady about the Christian faith. After sharing a few things about God, her response to me was, “James, I hate religion.” I surprised her by saying, “I hate religion too!” She was very confused and said, “I don’t understand. How can you hate religion? You’re a Christian.” I explained to her that I wasn’t a religious person (someone that follows man’s traditional standards of being a Christian), but I was a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.
As Christians, it’s important to know that following Jesus is a lifestyle NOT a religion. Every day we live for the Lord Jesus because of our relationship with Him. In the opening Scripture of John 15:4, Jesus tells us to abide in Him or else we will not be able to bear fruit. What is He saying to us? Well, He’s explaining that the only way for us to bear fruit (doing something of spiritual value for His Kingdom and for our benefit) is to abide (remain) in Him. If we’re going to abide with Christ, then we must be obedient to His commandments.
1 John 3:24- Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
Our obedience to God’s commandments shows that we love Him and will abide (remain) with Him. In return He will abide (remain) with us through the Holy Spirit that lives within us. God gave us the Holy Spirit when we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are led by the Holy Spirit because we are His children.
Romans 8:14- For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
The Holy Spirit leads and guides us so that we can live a lifestyle that is pleasing and glorifying to the Lord. How does He lead us? He does it by teaching and reminding us of the things that we were taught by Christ.
John 14:26- But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
When you live for Jesus that’s when you’re abiding in Him.
