"The Angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay." Matthew 28: 5-6
When Jesus rose from the dead that first Easter Sunday, it was the greatest event in world history. Jesus was in the tomb for three days and as He told His disciples that He would rise on the third day, so He did. Our Lord Jesus could not be captured by death. Jesus appeared to more than five hundred witnesses.
Our God is alive and He lives forever more. The Christian God is the only God who died and rose again. This teaches us many things about Jesus and those of us who are His disciples.
In John's Gospel, Jesus said that He had the authority to lay down His life and He also had the authority to take it up again and He did. John10:17-18 says, "The reason My Father loves Me is that I lay down My life, only to take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from My Father."
Resurrection Sunday proves the Scriptures true, both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. Psalm 16:10, "Because you will not abandon Me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay." If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then this would have proven the Scriptures to be false - But He did rise, proving our Lord is true in all He said and did.
Resurrection Sunday gives us Hope and Assurance of our own future. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we have a Hope and an Assurance. If we do away with Jesus' resurrection, then we have no hope. Easter Sunday, gives us Hope.
Resurrection Sunday gives us the power to live the Christian life. Romans 6:4, "We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
We cannot live the Christian life apart from God. We cannot do it in our own strength, but Jesus sent God the Holy Spirit to give us His wisdom and to teach us all truth.
Resurrection Sunday also assures us of our future inheritance. One Biblical writer said it this way: "Because we have a living hope, we can experience hopeful living." Jesus is alive and because of that, we have a wonderful future.
1st Peter 1:3, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
Resurrection Sunday gives us Hope - a living Hope. His name is Jesus. We can have an abundant life down here on earth and because of Resurrection Sunday, a wonderful eternal life with Jesus. Amen.
