Love One Another

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. John 13:34

One of my favorite TV shows growing up was Full House. There’s an episode when Stephanie drives the car into the kitchen, which obviously destroys the house. When Danny (her father) confronts her about it, she says, “I know that you don’t love me anymore because I destroyed the house.” However, Danny responds by saying, “Stephanie, I’m not thrilled that you drove the car into the kitchen, but I will always love you. There are things that you will do that I won’t like, but I will never stop loving you.”

In this episode we can see God’s love for us. Danny had the heart of our Heavenly Father as he expresses to his child unconditional love for her. God’s love for us is unconditional as well. The Lord is displeased when we sin, but His love for us never changes. He continues to love us despite our sin. We could commit the worst act possible and He will still love us. We can truly see the Father’s love toward us through the crucifixion of Christ.

Romans 5:8- But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

In understanding God’s unconditional love toward us and that He calls us to love one another the same way, then we should start living this out in our own lives if we aren’t already. God desires for us to love others despite what they may do or say to us. I understand that this is a difficult task sometimes, but the more we walk in God’s love it becomes easier. How do we walk in God’s love? It’s by putting others before yourself. Jesus showed us this by sacrificing His own life for us.

John 15:13- Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

It also takes humility to walk in the love of God because it’s not about you anymore it’s about other people. When we truly start walking in God’s love, that’s when we can impact the world. Always remember that we are called to love one another.
