Is There a Tomorrow?

Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, Looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. 2 Peter 3:11-12

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has for many years pictured a clock on its cover. The position of the hands shows the minutes before midnight. According to this symbolism, when the hands reach midnight, humankind will have brought about its own end. Will there be a tomorrow?

Three of my nephews have recently been blessed with babies born into their families. The pictures show them lovingly staring at the beauty and miracle of childbirth. Yet, in the back of their minds is always a haunting question about their future. What kind of world will this lovely child grow up in to inherit? Will there even be a tomorrow?

Many people fear economic collapse, nuclear war or killer diseases or some other catastrophe. As Christians we need not fear anything. We know that no matter what happens in our world, God is still in control. We also know that there will be a time when the world as we know it will be brought to an end. This will happen at the return of Christ.

Some people mock Christians and their belief in the Lord’s return. In Peter’s day, there were also those who mocked them. They looked at the world around them and found no outward change. They were certain that the belief of Christians that Christ would return and that the world would end had no substance.

We live as citizens of two worlds. Christians have never centered their lives in this world alone. We have always known that we are citizens of two worlds. Our belief in God is that even when this world is brought to an end, we still have a greater world in which to live eternally. This world is not our home; heaven is our eternal home.

Because of our belief in Christ, there is an eternity of tomorrows in Christ’s presence. But, until the day when He returns, we rest assured that we do not need to fear, instead we keep spreading the gospel, so that others too may inherit the Kingdom of heaven.
