Representative of Christ, Despite the Chains

I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for Him, as I should. Ephesians 6:20NLT

Paul uses the role of ambassador to describe the function of followers of Jesus Christ. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making His appeal through us. In 2 Corinthians 5:20 Paul says “We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”

Sharing the gospel with those around us is not just good news, but it is urgent news that the world needs to know. They need the Hope of Christ.

Being an ambassador in chains speaks of obstacles. As Christians we do not wait until all circumstances are favorable before we begin to fulfill our function as servants of Jesus Christ. Obstacles, handicaps, difficulties and disappointments will always be there. We need to keep our eyes on God, pray continually and obey Christ in all circumstances.

Being an ambassador speaks of having an obligation. Paul did not throw in the towel and quit when he found himself bound with chains and neither should we give up simply because the way is difficult.

Even though we have our limitations, there will always be opportunities to share the gospel. It was through Paul’s limitations and handicaps that he was able to minister in a big way.

Paul faced his situation with a positive mental attitude based on his faith in Jesus Christ. He could have reacted to his circumstances in a negative manner. He could have given into to self-pity. He had the option to be hostile to his captors. He could even have been intimidated and compromised the message of Christ.

He was however an exceptional example to us today that he would not permit himself to do anything except be a true servant of Jesus Christ in the midst of the most unpleasant of circumstances.

We are Christ’s representatives or ambassadors. His spokesperson. He depends on us to take His Good News to those who desperately need to hear it. Let us follow the example of the Representative in Chains.
