Our God Forgives
"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin." Psalm 51:1-2
The Bible is full of Scriptures that speak to us about forgiveness. Forgiveness is an act of pardon. As Christians, we have faith in Jesus that He does forgive and He forgets our sins when we ask Him for forgiveness.
We also need to ask for forgiveness from other folks who we have sinned against. The question that was asked of the Lord Jesus by the Apostle Peter was, "Lord how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? (Matthew 18:21).
Jesus answered and said to Peter (and to Christians today), that we are to forgive others who have sinned against us 70 times 70. This means that there is no number, but we are to keep on forgiving.
King David is a great example of God's forgiving grace and mercy. The terrible things that David did would be unforgiving in the world's eyes. He also angered God when he took a census of the people. But God forgave him and said that David was a man after God's own heart.
Jesus saves us from our sins and He also forgives us of our sins. Church, this is not a license to sin, for Jesus does not want us to sin but to be imitators of Himself.
The Bible says when we ask for forgiveness, He is faithful to forgive us. That is great and wonderful news for us today.
Max Lucado wrote this: "Our Savior kneels down and gazes upon the darkest acts of our lives. But rather than recoil in horror, He reaches out in kindness and says, "I can clean that if you want." And from the basin of His grace, He scoops a palm full of mercy and washes our sin."
Let us never forget what the Lord has granted to us His Children. His blood has covered us and has forgiven us. His body was broken and bruised so we could have eternal life with Him. Let us do the same by forgiving those who have sinned against us or if we have sinned against them, ask for forgiveness. Amen.
