I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
In 2003, a 13 year old girl named Bethany Hamilton was an up and coming surfer in Hawaii. However, things came to a halt when she was attacked by a shark and lost her left arm. Due to her faith in God, she was able to bounce back quickly. Four weeks after the attack, she got back on her surfboard and started riding the waves again. Now at the age of 28 years old, she is a professional surfer. Bethany was able to overcome the odds because she understood that her strength came from Christ.
Today you might be dealing with your own tragic event. The situation that you’re facing may not be as extreme as Bethany’s, but it’s something that has truly affected your life. All the odds are stacked up against you and you’re not sure of what to do next. Well, there are a few things from Bethany’s story that will help you to overcome the odds.
As I have previously stated in the introduction, Bethany’s faith in God helped her to bounce back. If you’re going to bounce back from the horrible thing that has happened to you, then you must place your faith in God. What does it mean to place your faith in God? It simply means to trust Him. I understand that you might have questions about your circumstance like; “God, why did this happen to me? Why would You allow this?” However, instead of questioning God start trusting in God.
Proverbs 3:5-6- 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.
Bethany also realized that God is her strength. She knew without Him it would be impossible to surf again. However, she trusted in God and gave Him full control of the situation. In the process of doing this, the Lord became her strength.
Psalm 37:39-40- 39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord. He is their strength in the time of trouble. 40 And the Lord shall help them and deliver them. He shall deliver them from the wicked and save them because they trust in Him.
When you place your faith in God and He becomes your strength, that’s when you will overcome the odds.
