No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. John 15:15
In this Scripture, Jesus is calling the disciples friends. This is such an awesome truth because you and I are His disciples as well, which means that we are also His friends. In all the years that I’ve been following Jesus, He has been my best friend! I think we can learn a lot from Jesus on how to be a good friend. So, this brings me to my question for today. How do we be a good friend? There are three ways that we can be a good friend, so let’s get into it.
John 15:13- Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
Jesus laid down His life for us by dying on the cross. He put us before Himself. If you want to be a good friend, then put others before yourself. How do you put others before yourself? The answer is by being unselfish. Put your friend’s needs before your own. Once you’re able to put others before yourself, that’s when you can show unconditional love.
Proverbs 17:17- A friend loves at all times and a brother is born for adversity.
Jesus loves us all the time even when we sin and mess up. There are going to be times in life when your friends may hurt you, but it’s in those moments that you should show them unconditional love. Is this easy to do? No. However, it wasn’t easy for Jesus to die for your sins, but He did it because of His love for you.
Romans 5:8- But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
When you show unconditional love toward your friends, that’s when you can be loyal to them.
Proverbs 18:24- A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
What does it mean to stick closer than a brother? It means to ALWAYS be there for your friends. Being loyal to your friends is important if you’re going to be a good friend. Jesus shows us His loyalty by never leaving nor forsaking us. He is ALWAYS there for us and we are called to be there for our friends as well.
Putting others before yourself, showing unconditional love, and being loyal will make you a good friend.
