Dr. Hurkens ("Pastor Steve") has been the lead pastor of East Rockaway Nazarene for over 25 years. Pastor Steve holds a Ph.D. in Christian Counseling. He has a vision for the community, and a burning desire to influence Christ followers to impact their world by reaching out to those who don't have a personal relationship with Christ. He encourages all followers of Christ to connect people with Christ. Pastor Steve firmly believes in the importance of prayer to be the foundation of everything the church does. He believes that Christ followers can live victorious lives through being empowered by the Holy Spirit, hence, overcoming whatever situations they may face in their lives.
Pastor Steve is originally from South Africa, where he was already a Pastor before coming to the United States. He says "God called me to care for those He puts in my path. My vision for our church is that Christ followers will share love and show concern for one another, as well as the unsaved of the world".
He has been in full time ministry for over 40 years. Pastor Steve declares that by placing our faith and trust in God, we can overcome any obstacle in our lives. He also believes that we do not meet by chance, but that people come into our lives for A REASON, in order for us to be Christlike to them and share His love with them. "I would love for you to visit our great church, anytime, and if there is anything within my ability that I can be of assistance to you, my door is always open."

Joyce Terry, Director
Little Pebbles Nursery School
Joyce's journey here began in the fall of 2017 when she applied for a part-time position as a teacher assistant in the daycare. Upon being hired, she immediately sensed this was a special place, not knowing what God had in store for her future. In 2018, she was appointed as the new Director of Little Pebbles Nursery School & Daycare Center - a promising new role she is eager to serve in and make her mark, with God's help. One of her favorite scriptures is one she holds firmly to: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord; plans to prosper you and not harm you, to give you a hope and a future." -Jeremiah 29:11
Joyce is pursuing her PhD at Indiana Wesleyan University, studying The Relationship Between Cultural Intelligence and Ministerial Effectiveness. As a lifelong learner, she is an advocate for children’s literacy and is the founder of Betty's Bookmobile, designed to provide reading resources to school aged children. A licensed minister in the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana), she is also a sought after psalmist, speaker, and conference/workshop facilitator.
In 2013, she and her husband of 18 years, Jimmy, relocated from Columbus, Ohio where they formerly served in ministry together at a large congregation, leading in various capacities – he as a youth pastor and she as a Minister of Worship and the Director of Children’s Ministry, to name a few. Presently, they live in East Rockaway, NY.

Pastor Sharon works alongside her husband, Pastor Steve, in full time ministry. She is a Pastor, Life Coach and a Success Principles Coach. She believes that God sent His Son Jesus to earth not only to give us eternal life but also to give us a life of fulfillment while we wait for Him to return. Her ministry is focused on women and she believes that God wants to work in everyone's lives so that they can experience His divine Peace.
Sharon is the published author of Exit the Wilderness and Just For Today. She is an accomplished pianist in the worship team and heads up the Life Groups. Sharon holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutritional Counseling. She teaches women to accept God's highest calling on their lives so that they can be blessed to see Him work in and through even the toughest and darkest situations.
One of her favorite Scriptures is John 10:10 "The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly." NIV
Music Worship Leader
Chris Balbi is excited to serve East Rockaway Nazarene as the worship leader in this season. As Chris calls East Rockaway his hometown, he has been worshipping with our congregation for over two decades, with the privilege to witness firsthand how God has moved through our congregation in song and worship.
To Chris, worship is far more than the songs we sing, but how we orient our daily lives. Romans 12:1 says: "I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice - the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him."
Chris is currently pursuing his Masters in Divinity (M.Div) with Northwest Nazarene University, with a concentration in Missional Leadership. The program is designed to equip believers to be the hands and feet of Jesus outside the walls of the church into the rest of the world. Chris has previously served with Youth With A Mission (YWAM), training and equipping young adults to carry the gospel and a heart of worship into all spheres of society.
Chris also has his Local Minister's License to serve in East Rockaway Nazarene. In addition, he is also leading our Young Adult Bible Study.
